Hey there, Airshed Explorer!
Air is all around us! It is made of different gases like oxygen and nitrogen.
It’s important to have clean air. It’s not only important to humans, but also the planet!
Learn more about air pollution, the importance of clean air, and AQHI below.
All About Air pollution
These can be small particles in the air that affect the air quality and can make us sick. So, where does air pollution come from?

What is the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI)?
The purpose of AQHI is to help you know how the air quality will affect your health.
Low risk, means you can play outside with little to no risk to your health. High risk, or very high risk, means outdoor activities should be limited.
Here are some ways you can help:
- Plant trees
- Carpool
- Ride your bike or walk to school
- Avoid unnecessary open fires
Check out these Air-mazing Facts!
- Did you know air is made up of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen? It also has small amounts of other gases like carbon dioxide, neon, and hydrogen!
- Air holds tiny particles called aerosols. They can include pollen, dust, soot, smoke, and other particles from car exhaust and power plants.
- Plants use carbon dioxide and sunlight to make food and oxygen. This process is called photosynthesis!
-
Did you know relative humidity is how much water air can hold before it rains?
-
Air pressure changes! The closer you are to sea level the higher the air pressure. This is caused by the atmosphere pushing down. The higher up you go, the less pressure. The difference in air pressure can cause your ears to pop.
- The air in our atmosphere acts protects the earth from getting too cold!
- There are living organisms in the air! Air contains a wide variety of living organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes, known as bioaerosols, as well as pollen and spores.
- Humans breathe approximately 35lbs of air in a day!
