Allison Guthrie, a graduate from Ecole Secondaire Notre Dame High School in Red Deer, is the recipient of this year’s Martha Kostuch Scholarship for Environmental Excellence sponsored by the Parkland Airshed Management Zone (PAMZ).  This fall Allison will attend the University of Calgary, pursuing a degree in Environmental Science.

Allison plans to combine her fascination with living things and her passion for science by studying Environmental Science.  Through a degree which emphasizes applied biotechnology, she will not only study nature, but also use the knowledge she has gained in order to find solution to environmental problems our society is facing.

Active in her community, Allison is a great example of a balanced and contributing lifestyle. While attending Notre Dame, Allison played an active leadership role in the developing science opportunities such as science fairs and Science Olypics. Allison was also active in fundraising for RCMP Victim Services, Aspire Special Needs and the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre. Allison enjoys being an avid volunteer with the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, expanding her knowledge of our ecosystem.

The $2500 Martha Kostuch scholarship is given out on a yearly basis to high school graduates living in the PAMZ region (west central Alberta) who wish to further their education in an area that will benefit the environment. The scholarship was established in 2008 to honour the legacy of Dr. Martha Kostuch, a founding Board member of PAMZ and lifelong environmental advocate.
